Pulling into Little Bay it looked to be a quaint place with not much going on. All the buildings seemed white and new however and yes, as we discovered they were brand new, some still being built, grass being watered and construction zones in place. There was one place open, - a bar. So after completing customs and security clearance (in a shed) we headed there for a drink and to look out over the half dozen boats anchored.
There was/is an active volcano here, last erupted about 20 years ago so people are slowly coming back to the island I believe. We walked the sandy black beach and looked at the stones wondering if they were volcanic pumice stones? Thought about a tour, but 2.5 hours in a taxi, in the late afternoon, with two kids, isn't my idea of fun (as many of you would agree) so we had a relaxing afternoon on the boat instead.
The next morning we sailed by the landslides, or old lava flows, and saw the old capital, Plymouth's buildings buried. Devastating really. Such a mammoth chuck of this place has been taken away. The deep crevices carved into the land are gob-smacking, and the size of some of the boulders that have either rolled down the mountain or been excavated away by the lava look threatening to roll again at some point.
An interesting place indeed.
